Summary
This active journey from Hachinohe to Sendai combines hiking, cycling and sea kayaking along some of the most spectacular sections of the Michinoku Coastal Trail.
Walk across the grassy coastline of Tanesashi Kaigan, hike and cycle through the dramatic landscapes around Tanohata, and explore the beautiful shores of Jodogahama by both land and sea. Continue south by bicycle through Ofunato, Rikuzentakata and the Hirota Peninsula, discovering coastal communities shaped by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The journey finishes with a very memorable hike: either the hike over the Dairokuten route overlooking Onagawa or a pilgrimage across the sacred island of Kinkasan.
Blending outdoor adventure, coastal scenery, local culture and stories of resilience, this tour offers a wonderfully varied experience of Japan’s Tohoku region.

DAY1:

Hachinohe
Hiking: 9km About 3.5hrs

Start tour at Hachinohe station. Transfer via local JR line to Same station and begin the hike. Hike from Same station past the trail head in Kabushima Shrine and on to the Tanesashi Kaigan Natural Lawn.
Stay overnight in Tanesashi Kaigan area

DAY2:

Tanohata Hike & Bike
Hiking: 3.5km About 3hrs
Cycling: 18km About 2.5~3hrs

After breakfast, transfer to Tanohata Area and enjoy hiking and Cycling along the Michinoku Coastal trail.
Stay overnight in Northern Miyako area

DAY3:

Jodogahama Hike and Sea kayak
Hiking: 6.5km About 3~4hrs
Level of difficulty:★★★☆☆
After breakfast, hike a scenic section along the trail, followed by sea kayak experience at Jodogahama Beach. In the afternoon, transfer to Otsuchi town and learn about the disaster and recovery here. Enjoy a local traditional dance performance at dinner.

DAY4:

Ofunato to Rikuzentakata Bike
Cycling: 20km About 5~6hrs

After breakfast, transfer to Rikuzentakata area and enjoy a day of cycling through this area, learning about the local people who live here. After lunch take a cruise on a local fisherman’s boat and learn about aquaculture.

DAY5:

Kinkasan Island Hike
Hiking: 6km About 3.5~4hrs
Level of difficulty:★★★☆☆
After breakfast, transfer to the Ayukawa port and take a boat across to Kinkasan Island. Here you will hike to the summit of the mountain, with spectacular views over the bay. In the late afternoon return to Sendai to finish the tour.

Onnagawa Dairokuten Hike
Hiking: 10km About 4~5hrs
Level of difficulty:★★★☆☆
After breakfast transfer to Onagawa area, and enjoy hiking the Dairokkuten Mt trail course. Transfer to Sendai to finish the tour in the late afternoon.
